Board to discuss new smoking limits

The town’s Board of Health will hold a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on proposals to ban smoking within 15 feet of all municipal buildings, and to prohibit the use of electronic cigarettes, including those that provide a vapor of liquid nicotine to users, anywhere that smoking tobacco is not allowed. The hearing will be held in the first floor conference room of the Senior Center at 27 Maple St. The penalties for violations would be $100 for the first offense, $200 for a second offense, and $300 for a third violation within two years of a second violation. The board’s recent vote to increase the age to purchase tobacco products in town will take effect July 1, when the minimum age will become 19 years old; next year, the threshold becomes 20 years old, and on July 1, 2015, the minimum age will be increased to 21.
