Contest aims to get kids outside

Town recreation officials are encouraging residents to get involved in a free national competition that seeks to inspire kids to connect with nature and take part in outdoor activities. The “Get to Know“ contest, which runs through Nov. 1 in the United States and Canada, aims to motivate youths to submit art, writing, photography, video, and music pieces inspired by the great outdoors. Winners will see their works published in the organization’s electronic calendar for next year, and may win other prizes like underwater cameras, gift cards, and other items, according to the contest’s website. Organization officials say that the competition seeks to combat sedentary lifestyles that are becoming predominant as more people opt for indoor activities. Not receiving enough outdoor time can inhibit children’s development, they said. For more information, visit the competition’s website, www.get-to-know.org , or call the recreation department at 781-449-2757.
