Casino rezoning vote slated for Dec. 9

The Board of Selectmen have set Dec. 9 as the tentative date for Special Town Meeting to decide whether a 187-acre parcel near Interstate 495 and Route 16 should be rezoned to allow a resort casino complex being proposed by Foxwoods Massachusetts. The session will be convened only if voters in a townwide referendum on Nov. 19 support a host community agreement that was negotiated by selectmen and the casino developer. If its proposal is approved by voters and at Town Meeting, where the rezoning would require a two-thirds majority, Foxwoods would still need to convince the Massachusetts Gaming Commission that Milford is the best location for the single resort casino license being granted in Greater Boston. Foxwoods is competing with projects in East Boston and Everett for the state license. The Gaming Commission’s decision is expected next spring.
