School board ponders leaner budget

At a recent meeting, the School Committee heard from Superintendent Jon Sills regarding proposed revisions to the school system’s budget for next fiscal year that would bring the figure closer to the Finance Committee’s requested 2.88 percent increase over this year’s figure, rather than the 6.7 percent increase in the initial budget draft. Potential cuts include reductions to the Job Lane Elementary School foreign language program; the position of Davis Elementary School’s Response to Intervention specialist; purchase of social studies textbooks at John Glenn Middle School; and an educational assistant position in the Bedford High School library. The School Committee is preparing its budget proposal for this spring’s annual Town Meeting.
