Schools to consider dropping holidays

The Northborough-Southborough Regional School Committee will discuss the possibility of eliminating two religious holidays from next year’s school calendar during its meeting Wednesday. According to a statement from Superintendent Charles Gobron, a study group formed this fall has recommended that the regional district hold classes on both Rosh Hashana and Good Friday during the 2014-2015 school year. Students and teachers who do not attend school on those days for religious reasons would be excused. The reasoning given for the proposed change is that as the district’s communities become more diverse, school holidays for other religions would have to be considered as well. Public comments on the calendar can be sent to clepore@nsboro.k12.ma.us or addressed at the meeting, which will begin at 7 p.m. in Algonquin Regional High School on Bartlett Street.
