Buy a brick for 19 Carter project

A crumbling old church building in the center of town is receiving lots of attention these days, as a local group spearheads a final fund-raising campaign to turn the 1887 Gothic revival structure into a community space. The group has leveraged $360,000 in donations and $175,000 in pro bono professional services over the last three years toward the effort to renovate and refurbish the former Methodist Episcopal Church at 19 Carter St. With more than 75 percent of the work completed, organizers of the 19 Carter project have started a buy-a-brick campaign to help pay for the final improvements. The bricks, engraved with the donor’s name or personalized message for $250, will be mounted on the foundation of the restored building. There is a limited number of bricks available, and the deadline for buying one is June 30, according to an announcement on the group's website, www.19carter.org.
