Metco scholarship fund exceeds target

The Metco College Scholarship Fund of Lexington, a nonprofit that provides grants to local Metco students continuing their education after high school, exceeded its goal of raising $5,000 through a corporate matching fund drive this spring. Previously, the organization relied on contributions from town residents. But this year, trustee David Rothstein worked with a locally based company, Cubist Pharmaceuticals, to increase the organization’s coffers. Cubist promised to match all donations made between May and June up to $5,000, and the campaign reached its goal on June 5, said Rothstein. Metco is a program that allows students from Boston to attend suburban school districts such as Lexington. Each year, the local fund awards scholarships of several thousand dollars.
