Primary battle could cost Santorum the war

Far-right stances fuel primary surge but could alienate independents in fall

Three years before Rick Santorum decided to seek the Republican presidential nomination, he laid out his vision for America. “This not a political war at all,” he said. “This is not a cultural war. This is a spiritual war.” But now, as Santorum is in the political war of his life heading into pivotal primaries on Tuesday in Michigan and Arizona, it is the image of him as a cultural and religious warrior that could help win the nomination - but hurt in a general election.

If Santorum is nominated, the election will then turn to focus on President Obama. The media will be the President's perfect all though, and continue this narrative about Santorum's religion. There is nothing in Santorum's past speeches or behavior that is anywhere as radical as the speeches and behavior of Obama mentor Jeremiah Wright. Of course, the media will continue to ignore this stain on the president's past.

Richmond- Jeremiah Wright is not running for President. I've been to Rome and I don't want the guy in the funny hat running the United States thank you very much. As much as I'd love to see Santorum win the nomination (I believe he would be quickly and thoroughly dispatched by the President), I'm not sure that would be so good for the country. I'd rather see Romney take his shot and we would then have a real referendum on Obama's ability to actually lead the country.

Shouldn't the headline read: Tea Party may cost Republican's the White House? This pandering to the far-right need to for a religiously-flavored small government--so small that it isn't big enough to help the poor but it can slip under your bedroom door--is what will cost the Republican's the White House. The Tea Party may have started out focused on the deficit, but it quickly got mired in social issues that most Americans will find intrusive and unconstitutional and definitely not the hallmark of small government.

Giermund, My point is about the media. It has put Santorum's religion in the spotlight, and never did so for Obama. The media will use this line of attack endlessly, against Santorum, if he is the nominee. This was not too dissimilar to the treatment George W. got from the media. Many left wing pundits accused him of proselytizing, for example. The media, save for Fox News, has left the Obama religion story completely alone.

Santorum is obviously a Catholic supremacist who surely will follow his conscience in the process of making any presidential decisions. His negative comments about Protestant churches reveals his self-confidence about his beliefs....because that self-confidence, he feels, comes from God. I think the GOP should do what the voters of PA did in his last bid for re-election as a senator from PA: Cut him loose.

The collateral damage from Santorum, Gingrich, and Palin continues to bury the Republican party. Palin is hankering for her own run at the President's seat in 4 years - it would serve her well if Obama was elected and Palin could enter a clean slate in 4 years!!! Palin's new video tells it all!

Richmond, you have a short memory. The media did (not just the faux media Fox) many stories on Obama and Wright. If fact, they hounded on it so much that Obama was forced to give an announced speech just to deal with it.

Except that Jeremiah Wright wasn't running against Rick Santorum, so your comparison is flawed. Obama only LISTENED to Jeremiah Wright from the pulpit--Rick Santorum IS the pulpit. Radical nut-job Catholic wing known as the Legionnaires of Christ. Look them up on the internet. Very revealing.
