Santorum’s faith isn’t driving vote of Catholics

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is a proud traditional Catholic. But that may not be helping him with Catholic voters. Santorum has not had a significant victory among Catholic voters in any of the 10 states where exit polls have been taken. While he has outpolled frontrunner Mitt Romney among voters who are born-again or evangelical, Romney does better among Catholics, strong evidence that Catholics are not rallying around Santorum’s faith-based opposition to abortion and birth control. Catholics, analysts say, are making their choices much like the Republican electorate at large - focusing on economic issues and electability.

So running a story on how Santorum is failing to win over fellow Catholics is anti-Catholic? Who knew?

Maybe what some Catholics don't like about Santorum is that he's a proud traditional Catholic. Seriously, how could anyone be opposed to birth control?

What THIS Catholic doesn't like about Sen. Santorum is that he cherry-picks his faith and behaves more like one of the Pharisees than one of the Apostles.

Santorum is "very strong on the moral issues, and I agree with that,'' D'Avolio said. Paraphrasing my favorite grammartarian, Bill Clinton, " It depends what the meaning of moral is." Senator Santorum's morality is not my morality and surprisingly, we're both correct only as it applies to our own selves. First Amendment: I.  Freedom of Religion, Speech, Press and Petition. After very lengthy debates, discussions and great input by Thomas Jefferson, this is the deliberate and decisive choice of both being the First Amendment and order of the rights within.  Interesting.

"Doyle said that many older Catholics identify with the Democratic Party, and that nonpracticing Catholics tend to be socially liberal." Santorum focuses on the sexual and reproductive issues where he can make common cause with non-Catholic religious conservatives. Doyle avoided the phrase 'Kennedy liberals' - which would cover Catholics who take to heart the Church's teachings on poverty, labor, social justice. Did you know that labor unions are explicitly advocated by papal encyclical? Not by listening to Santorum.

This particular article doesn't seem to be written by someone with lots of Catholic savvy, but I was surprised by how many journalists have 'come out' as Catholics since Santorum's recent wins. After John Carroll, probably the most outspoken Catholic at the Globe was Charles Pierce, who wrote in the Globe Magazine about why he is still a practicing Catholic, even after the sexual abuse scandals. In hindsight his thoughtful writing on such topics as impoverished MA mill towns shows the type of Catholic sensibility that can make common cause with the Democrats. But there are others.

This story kind of indicates that Catholics are smarter and less lemming-like than evangelicals. :)

I'm glad to hear this, especially after his comment about John F. Kennedy. IN fact, he is trying to do away with the First Amendment by installing a religious state. He does not believe in separation of church and state. In fact, the whole issue of women's health has become a subterfuge under "religious freedom." Since when do we not have religious freedom? I am sick of hearing about contraceptives and abortion from the people who would deny women their rights to a healthy life as would the Taliban. Thanks Republican dictators.

Interesting. The tech gurus at the Globe have wiped out all my "saved" articles. Has this happened to anyone else?

Not only that, but it won't let me save anything right now. Seriously, Globers, I know a couple of junior high schoolers who should be able to help you out. Shoot me an email and I'll put you in touch.
