Did Mitt Romney miss his “Sister Souljah moment’’? The debate erupted recently when Rush Limbaugh called a Georgetown Law student, who spoke in favor of Obama’s contraception policy, a “slut’’ and a “prostitute.’’ Romney’s response struck some inside and outside his party as woefully inadequate. Recent history shows presidential candidates face peril and promise when they choose either to confront or ignore the most inflammatory voices within their party. Bill Clinton, in the 1992 presidential campaign, denounced the rapper Sister Souljah for her remarks after the LA riots.

We're still waiting for President Obama and the democrat congress to apologize for Bill Maher and Letterman.
I am sure Michael Levenson and the Globe are workiing right now, writing an article on why Obabam has acdepted money from Maher adn Letterman and will soon call on them to repudiate their remarks about women- using the c word for example. Oh....wait a minute... that would be the hallmark or a great President and a great newspaper.
the Republican candidates have exceeded standards of the democrats in their response to this issue. your article makes no mention of the black panthers with weapons guarding voting locations to prevent white voters from voting during obama's election in 2008. there have been no apologies by obama. what's more he has instructed the Justice Dept not to investigate or prosecute.
The double standard is truly stunning. Michael Levenson can pen an entire article about Romney "missing his Sister Souljah moment", but it never dawns on him that the ugly language used by Rush is routine among the liberal comedians who haunt the left coast. In fact, the language usually gets a loud applause from the liberal elites who sit in the audience. I guess such ugliness is so routine on the left that it is acceptable to the media.
Why not make Romney responsible for the invasion of Pearl Harbor too? So many dudes on the comedy left swing for the bleachers and their undeleted slams disappear silently fading away life puffs of smoke. Let me take this moment to make clear the stage setting the media performs in coordination with the Democratic National Committee and their back stage script writers is a national scandal. George Stephananopolis was told to deliver that "What do you think about contraception" line to Romney at the ABC debate. Then the whole country's slobbering media swung their bats hitting home runs that made Obama's total failure as a president disappear. No jobs, $8/gal gas, Solyndra's $57 Billion boondoggle, that stupid $48,000 Chevy Volt, national debt like Mt. Everest with the chinese holding our maxed out credit card --- all went into some locked drawer. It is time for the American people - yes, all of us decent, fair minded citizens - to stand tall and just tell them to shut the #%$% up! It does not matter about politics, left or right. We are all being manipulated and lied to by all these media masters of the big lie. Adolph Hitler's monster propangadist said it right. Tell a monstrous lie over and over again and everyone will believe it. Romney is a decent, honorable man capable of leading this country. He is an intelligent, experienced leader with the ability to do what that stupid Obama has been either unable or unwilling to do for the last 3 1/2 years. Stand up, America and tell these jerks to just "shut up"!
Are we going to keep talking about whether liberals or conservatives or more sexist? When will we face our trillion-dollar budget deficits, our huge international trade deficit, our long-term unemployment problem, a continued housing slump and other real problems? Now I remember. If we talked about the sad economic condition this country faces, Barack and Michelle would have to look for private housing in 2013.
Its unlikely that Levenson actually listened to the Limbaugh program. Rush's SOP is to respond to the absurd with the absurd. Which of course he did. And he quickly appologized and moved on. What is being lost in this silly debate is the absurdity of Ms Flukes testimony. This entire episode was contrived by Obama to make something out of nothing... and perfectly crafted I might add. Fluke is no "typical" student, but a 30 year old fringe activist that is now being managed by an Obama cronie. Time and time again, Obama "finds" these "victims" and uses them as typical evidence of his cause. When in fact these fringe kooks are not at all typical and are usually, as in this case, connnected to Obama's organization.
The Republicans are trying to equate Rush Limbaugh with Bob Hope...just a Republican entertainer. The more accurate comparison would be with Father Charles Coughlin, the anti-communist radio priest who became increasingly unhinged and decided that he could bring down Franklin Roosevelt in 1936 by aligning himself with Huey Long and a collection of isolationists. He started out as a defender of the common man and veered off into incoherent anti-semitism and a defense of Hitler and Mussolini as bulwarks against communism. He was the Father of rightwing talk radio, in a way, and a feared political actor in the 1930s. Eventually he went too far...as has Rush Limbaugh, who has become a blubbering beached whale of a man. Real men would repudiate his hatred of women and see this attack as of a piece with the rest of his sad (but vile) personality. Bob Hope was a Republican entertainer. Rush is something else again.
Jim's comments are spot on, especially his remark about Limbaugh's hatred of women. It seems to be pathological.
Apparently you attend these comedy venues along the "left coast" in person, if you know what they say and the response it evokes so well. But you a person to make sweeping and spurious assumptions based on your own mysterious sources.
Thanks for clearing up the mystery of how Obama got elected, it was the Black Panthers who were responsible. I see.
Typical liberal perspective..and ironic that your hero, BHO is a racist anti-semite whose (not so slow) erosion of personal liberties has a scary familiarity to 1930's Germany. "We're from the government, and we're here to help" is BHO's mantra and most of us don't want his help.
What the right wing forgets to remember is that Obama inherited a massive deficit, imploding financial markets,a meltdown in housing, and an economy shedding jobs at an alarming rate. For all this talk about "responsible spending ", I would ask every conservative this question -Who are all these fiscally responsible Republican presidents? Reagan? He started all the red ink Bush1? Cliinton? He gave W a 132 billion surplus. W then gave 90% of that surplus to the top 1% We the people! W then lowers the tax rate for 1% and starts a very stupid and expensive war on Bank of China credit card!
They won't disown Limbaugh because he represents what the base wants to hear, and Repubs need a big base turnout to have any shot. Look what happened to McCain when he said Obama wasn't an Arab and that people didn't need to be afraid of him. They booed him. And the base is appreciably more to the right now than they were four years ago. I wish we could go to a six-year presidential term so we wouldn't have to wade through this sewage as often.
mean-willie, you don't have to actually go to the West Coast to hear foul, sexist language from liberal entertainers. Just watch HBO and Comedy Central.
Have you considered the possibility that Mitt agrees with Rush? Aside from the absurdities, most people agree with Rush's point.. 1. Why are contraceptives prescribed in the first place? Sex is not a disease or a medical condtion. It is a choice. 2. If a woman chooses to have sex and she chooses not to want to become pregnant, then she should choose to take some kind of precautions. (i.e. condoms, birth control pills, etc.) 3. Do not tell congress that it costs $3,000 for birth control as this is a lie. Condoms cost about $.25 each, and b/c pills are actually readily available at no charge or $9 per month at Walmart. 4. The euphamistic term, "Pro-choice" is ironic in this case, as this Fluke woman has the freedom to choose whatever she wants in this case. But what she is "choosing" is that she wants to impose her choice on a Catholic institution that happens to not agree with her. Miss Fluke has the choice to go to another school that will provide her all the birth control pills she wants. Libs arrogantly and self rightously think that they are correct on these choice issues. Agree or not, the Catholic church believes that birth control is a sin. The church believes that abortion is murder. So, for BHO to arrogantly tell the Church that they must comply with his morality, or lack thereof, is utterly unconstitutional.
How nice... Another piece of pure Democratic Party rant disguised as a "mews story" (spelling intended. The Globe is assigning more and more of its staff to the left-listed doctrinaire stance Glob editors have decided must be adhered to if Barry the O is to recapture his 2008 glory day in New England. By the way, why can't that Fluke woman go to her local drug store and use some of her Saturday night beer money to buy her own contraceptives? After all, she is a grad-level student with only a little time left to party before she has to go out into the real world and get a job. And maybe Romney just chooses to stay out of a henpecked gender fight.
Unfortunately for you, we are a nation of laws, not religious doctrines. Your argument is backwards, and amounts to an assertion that religious institutions should be able to exempt themselves from laws.
Please refer to the US Constitution, First Ammendment for a primer on laws. Yes we are a nation of law. Read them. There is no law that requires anyone or any institution to take birth control pills or perform an abortion.... Choice is what we have.
No matter what the former Governor would say his words would be shredded by the Globe: So what is the best strategy? Blah - blah - blah Trixie!
I wish one of you guys would take the time to read, yeah I said read, the testimony of the Georgetown student. She said nothing about her own sex life. Rush did, she didn't. Rush is the one to claim that she had a lot of sex, not her. I hope women remember this in November and not even consider a Republican candidate for the White House, the Senate or the House. Republicans are called conservatives because they want to conserve the right go back to yesterdayyear when it was the white man who ruled everything. Well folks the black man had had enough in the 1960's and women held close to their coattails for the ride. This opened the Pandora's box on equality and all of you white men cannot stand to not have total power. Blacks and Women will NEVER go back. No matter how many Rush's pie holes scream and rant and try to bring us back to "the good old days" we will not let you do it. You have run your race, now step aside.
I was going to offer an opinion on the content of this article originally. However, after reading some of the comments before mine, I feel a need to comment on them. [NEW PARAGRAPH] Have people in general lost the ability to disagree politely or civilly? I'm beginning to think Rush Limbaugh and Jeremiah Wright are merely poster children for an era of "trash talk." That's how I'm perceiving some of the earlier comments. Ironically, some of the underlying points in some of those comments are interesting. However, they're covered with a lot of vitriol and hyperbole.
Mitt agrees with Limbaugh. That is why he didnt condemn it.
Obama has created 3.7 MILLION jobs since he took office. Thank you Pres Obama for your leadership.
Can you provide a source for this silly allegation?
