With shift north, going gets tougher for Santorum

April may prove the cruelest month for Rick Santorum. After Mitt Romney handily defeated him in Illinois Tuesday, the calendar holds a dwindling number of opportunities for a fresh surge by the conservative former senator. Santorum has a good chance of beating Mitt Romney on Saturday in the southern stronghold state of Louisiana, the last primary election of March. But then April will present votes in eight northern states that award a grand total of 329 delegates. Romney is favored in those states with the exception of Santorum’s home state of Pennsylvania.
