Senate defeats bill to strip subsidies from oil companies

The Senate today rejected a White House plan that would strip $24 billion in subsidies to the country’s largest oil companies, which could become a potent election-year issue among voters disgruntled by escalating gas prices. The 51-47 vote was mostly along party lines, with the Bay State’s senators split accordingly. Most Democrats, including Senator John Kerry, voted in favor of eliminating the subsidies but fell far short of the 60 votes needed to withstand a filibuster. Senator Scott Brown joined most Republicans in rejecting the effort.
