The Department of Defense has quietly approved an MIT proposal to build a $450 million research facility at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, in a joint venture between the university and the federally-funded Lincoln Laboratories, one of the Pentagon’s premier weapons labs, according to government officials. The ten-year project is especially welcome news at a time when budget cuts have already impacted the Air Force workforce on the base and as officials fear further military downsizing efforts,.
