WASHINGTON - Hispanic advisers to Mitt Romney have told him that it is vital that he soften the sharp rhetoric on immigration that he adopted during the Republican primary race and that he work to make inroads with one of the fastest-growing segments of the electorate.
Several advisers said it is evident that Romney is getting the message, and there are plans underway to make a push among Hispanic voters, who currently support President Obama by more than a 2-to-1 margin. The Romney campaign recently hired a full-time Hispanic outreach coordinator and has held several strategy meetings in Boston with Hispanic leaders.

Outreach is good, but pandering is bad. Pandering to special interests is the domain of the left, and should have no place in the Romney campaign. When Americans vote for their own self interest, the country loses. Romney's winning message will appeal to the majority who are looking at which candidate is better for the country, not for my little corner of it (ie, Hispanics, or any other special interest group.) Governing is NOT about awarding the people who supported you. This is a lesson we have learned as Barack Obama has spent his entire first term doling out goodies his special interests, ignoring what is best for the whole nation.
Don't worry. Mitt will say anything and do anything, no matter how distasteful it is to him, to finally win a real election.
If Mitt does not crack down on all the illegals I will not vote for him for sure. When are the pol's going to realize the illegals don't vote. Who wants criminals for voters anyways.

How you view this immigration question is really a question of how you grew up. Mitt Romney grew up in a patriarchal, narrowly tolerant culture. I am not talking about his religious beliefs, which everyone is entitled to, but somehow his fellow pew mates did not cotton to minorities or expansion of women's rights and he was by his own story deeply involved with that community. His parent's views of civil rights, quite liberal for the times, seemed overshadowed by his fellow schoolmates and the elders of the institutions to which he belonged. His wife's mother and father were not allowed to be at their daughter's wedding because they were not of the same faith. Again this is not religious doctrine but speaks to how accepting you are of others. No question some attention to law breaking is justified. How harsh the solution picked should be is the measure of candidate's outlook for an inclusive society while establishing the rule of law. We also are aware of Mr. Romney's past history of character lapses and judgment failures whether it is assaulting a fellow "different" student at age 18 or putting a dog on a roof for a nine hour drive at age 40. His approach to fairness has been shown to be a just a bit dicey at times and the Hispanic community in overwhelming numbers are turned off by it.

Out comes the Etch-a-Scetch! So Hispanics are underemployed and poor? Wow! Now that's a revelation!! And republicans are going to do what about that? Specifically?

One thing we know for sure is that Governor Romney will darn will follow through with what ever he claims he will do, which is more than anyone can say for Obama. Didn't Obama promise the Hispanics that he would 'fix' the immigration issue for them????? Obama did NOTHING - the Democrats had the majority - but - Obama did nothing for the Hispanics or any other immigration group. Is anyone keeping track of Obama's empty campaign promises to the masses four years ago! Hopefully, those people interested in immigration will remember and not fall for Obama's false campaign promises.
I believe Mr. Romney's answer was "self deportation" on the immigration issue. Now tell me where that nonsense comes from. My opinion is it comes from not engaging in a diverse world where solutions to human problems tend to be more complex. Your answer speaks more about your own opinion and I was talking about Mr. Romney's trustworthiness and his callous approach to social issues that formulates his rhetoric. His background certainly has shaped his approach as it does for the rest of us. There are glaring moral failures in his past history that have been verified and show not only why Hispanics view him with disfavor but also why his unfavorables remain high. In this state more than half his delegates to the convention were not chosen and the not chosen list included Charlie Baker, Brad Jones, and Kerri Healey. This was not a vote of confidence for the former governor and shows even his Party in his home state does not think he should be President(54% of the vote went to Paul supporters). As for what Hispanics want it is a mixed bag but they do look for some sensitivity to their concerns.
