Obama limits deportations of young immigrants

Nearly a million eligible for renewable work permits, not citizenship

President Obama, bypassing Congress on a deeply divisive issue, has moved to ease the threat of deportation for a generation of young illegal immigrants brought to this country as children, offering many a chance at legal status and renewable work permits, but not a path to citizenship.

What's a Constitution mean when you trying to get reelected. Pitiful

Pandering.

Wait a minute.....................Not quite such a good deal....................In order to claim a benefit a child would have to expose his/her parent(s) who are not exempt.........So, does this really benefit the illegal immigrant community?.......Little Johnny gets to stay, but mom and dad get deported, and take Johnny out of the country when they leave.

Polls are going south for Obama. He needs votes. It's that simple.

Where in the Constitution is there any mention of, or for that matter, definition of, illegal immigration? You can accuse the President of ignoring existing immigration law, but on this issue there is no Constitutional violation.

Great news--long overdue. The current Congressional gridlock--largely caused by GOP obstructionism--over reaching a reasonable immigration law has had enormous negative consequences for millions living in the US. If the Congress will not act to resolve the impasse, then kudos to the President for acting--irrespective of election year politics. For those who criticize, keep in mind that both George Bush and John McCain favored such an approach--the latter caving into the right when his re-election to the Senate was threatened. Right-wing demagoguery works sometimes.

who makes laws?

JLErwin3 Where in the Constitution is there any mention of, or for that matter, definition of, illegal immigration? Political pandering at its best. Obama and his chief henchman Axelrod will do anything and everything to get votes. When you are losing, you do desperate things. This is a prime example of that. Stay tuned, I'm sure that there will be more of this. Problem is, he can't hide from the miserable economy. Millions are hurting, out of work, with no hope and people want answers and are sick and tired of him blaming Bush. He has no plan. That's all he can do. More stimulus, throw more good money after bad.

Obama got some polling data back that told him he needed to boost his Hispanic numbers. This might be ruled illegal, but he still wins. They tell him to stop this, and he throws up his hands and says "Mean Republicans". This guy is ... not THE WORST, but close.

I'm looking at the Constitution right now, ace, and there is no mention of immigration in it. As to the other question below, Congress makes laws, and the President enforces them. So, what we have is the President deciding not to deport young adults who did not have a say in having been brought to this country. It will be up to Congress to debate whether they accept that or not, and they can issue a law to the effect that such an amnesty is not to be allowed, but nowhere in the Constitution, or at least the one available from the National Archives, does it say anything about immigration.

What, are people smugglers also time travelers? This particular amnesty applies to those who have been here for five or more years. It might result in an uptick in document forgeries. Ultimately, Congress needs to define an immigration policy, so these amnesties aren't really a good way to solve things. However much I might think Gingrich is a blowhard, he was at least correct in the debates that it is an issue that needs to be addressed concretely. 'Throw 'em all out' makes for great campaigning, but it is actually a budget buster.

JLErwin3 Ace, I see you interrupt the Constitution as a "living" document. Guess Obama can bypass the branch that MAKES laws under such a view

Interesting to note that members of congress on both sides have been interested in this legislation going back to 2001 and Luis Gutierrez. The specific dunderheads holding it back now are the usual cast of characters including: Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, Jon Kyl of Arizona, John McCain of Arizona, and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina - all whom have supported the bill in the past.

Obama also is fine with foreign citizens voting. I am sure JLerwin approves of that as well.

Sadly, exposing an illegal immigrant doesn't seem to have resulted in too many deportations. Even worse, when they are caught during/following criminal activity, they still seem to get a pass for the most part. So, in the off chance one of them was exposed in relation to a child issue, they are more likely to get a visa, free healthcare and a hearty welcome from Deval Patrick than a deportation hearing. Yup, I'm bitter but just look at the recent history here in the Commonwealth.

"The move comes a week before Mr. Obama heads to Orlando, Fla., to address the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials on Friday."

The word you are looking for is interpret, not interrupt, and you know nothing about what I think about the Constitution, so spare me the presumption. Since an executive order is not a law, he has not violated the Constitution. The President is bypassing Congress in the sense that he is not waiting for them to pass a law defining the status of these people. Immigration reform, whether it be a change to a stricter policy or something else, is something that has been left unfinished. Since it is unfinished, he actually has no authority to deport anyone, either, rather, he is enforcing the immigration laws that exist in the manner he believes they mean. It's a grey area, and one he may get burnt on come November.

You will cease and desist making personal attacks on me or we will escalate this to the moderators.

Romney signed an executive order that would have allowed the state police to make arrests for immigration violations towards the end of his time as governor of Massachusetts. The point is that executive orders have been used on both sides and I'm sure Romney would do it again if given the chance. Interestingly however Romney also has been quoted as saying:"I don't believe in rounding up 11 million people and forcing them at gunpoint from our country." Romney deep-down believes in government registration, levying taxes and application for citizenship for non-documented labor. He also seems to appreciate undocumented workers considering he hired illegal workers to landscape his yard. Kind of a home-grown spin on sending jobs to cheap labor overseas. You can hammer the American worker without ever leaving your house.

Other laws he has ignored that the liberal press and JLerwin think is fine: Medicare Reform Act. War Powers Act UNESCO $700,000 in taxpayer funds to AHCOA Obama Ignores Budget Law 3rd Year in Row New Black Panther Party Fast and Furious Defense of Marriage Act "recess" appointment poweers Add your own

This President just completely violated the Constitution by INVENTING a law that the lawfully elected Congress did not pass. Congress writes laws and the President signs them. If the president makes his own laws, he violates his sworn oath of office, which says that the President defends the Constitution. So this president has now committed purgory. Obama DELIBERATELY announced this "exeutive order" (otherwise called a "governmental Coup" when Congress left for summer recess. This makes Nixon's impeachment for the Watergate affair and Clinton's impeachment for Monica Lewinsky look like child's play. This is an major IMPEACHABLE offense, and the House should vote to REMOVE him from office.
