MIAMI — Governor Rick Scott said Monday that Florida will appeal a federal judge’s ruling striking down a Florida law that restricted doctors from talking with patients about gun ownership.
US District Judge Marcia Cooke ruled earlier this month in the case known as ‘‘Docs vs. Glocks.’’ Cooke agreed with physicians who contended the law violates free speech rights.

Here in FL guns are definitely a public health issue, and it has nothing to do with hunting or sportsmanship. Three times this month the morning traffic report has included warnings about street closures as police dealt with the aftermath of major shooting incidents during the night. FL also has a public health issue with Rick Scott, who's so far up the tea bag that he'd put us all in the grave to score political points.
While I agree with the American Academy of Pediatrics that guns are a public health issue - I don't believe the statistics quoted in the last sentence of the article are correct - that guns account for a third of all deaths from injury among teenagers. According to the CDC, 48% of teenager deaths are due to unintentional injury, 13% due to homicide, 11% due to suicide. 73% of the unintentional injuries are due to motor vehicle accidents, 7% to unintentional poisoning, 5% to unintentional drowning and only 2% due to unintentional discharge of firearms. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics website, firearms were the instrument of death in 85% of teen homicides and 43% of teen suicides. That means that guns account for 16.7% of teen deaths. www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db37.pdf www.childtrendsdatabank.org/?q=node/319
