John and Barbara Wise of Massillon have been married 45 years.

A medical center spokesman, Jim Gosky, said one shot was fired. Security officers reached the ICU in about one minute, wrested the gun away from the suspect, and held him until police arrives.

A doctor was in a nearby room when the shooting took place.

Gosky said privacy rules prevent release of details why Wise had been admitted to the unit a few days earlier.

Police said John Wise is being held on an attempted murder charge and is expected to be arraigned Monday. No motive was disclosed, but police are looking into the possibility that he wanted to end his wife’s suffering.
