Paul Ryan’s budget plan is built on a series of rosy assumptions

WASHINGTON — Paul Ryan says his budget plan would dramatically reduce government spending, protect defense, rescue Medicare and Medicaid, retain the poor’s safety net, and spur the economy.

Democrats contend that is nonsense. They say Ryan’s plan would cut taxes disproportionately for the wealthy, eliminate most or even all “discretionary” programs that aren’t defense-related, end today’s version of Medicare, drop many tax deductions that help average Americans, and worsen the economy.

Yes,if assumptions are "rosy". they may not work. Is pointing out that reducing tax rates bring in more revenue a "rosy" assumption? I think that past History shows that reduction of tax rates do indeed bring in more revenue. But, then, just because it happened in the past, there is no assurance it will happen in the future.Conditions may indeed be so skewed that the past is no guide. But, more "rosy" assumptions are: l. a huge "stimulus" package will lower Unemployment Rates. 2. Government backing and funding for "Clean" energy will always work. It all depends on whose "rosy" assumptions you are looking for.

So, Ryan would provide a $700,000 tax cut for the average member of the one percent while slashing funding for food stamps. Let's beat up on the most vulnerable members of society and bow to our rich superiors and hope they grace us with some of their new play-money. Sounds great! Yeah, let's do that.

Can you say Manchurian Candidate? This man wants nothing less than to destroy the USA.

One huge assumption is that the health insurance industry would have any interest in Medicare recipients at all. The insurance industry makes money by not paying for healthcare. Senior citizens require more healthcare than any other group. The only way the government can get them to take senior citizens now is by guaranteeing them a profit as it does with the Medicare "Advantage" corporate welfare program.

Not a plan at all, just an unfinanced hazy vision, and like all visions it seeks to rally the troops on to glory with rhetoric, by avoiding the critical details. (We'll all be free! uh, but you're gonna get killed in the battle, while I wait here.) / / Alas this is economics, and just wishing does not make it so, it's Voodoo economics redux.

*********************APRIL 30, 2012----Yesterday marked an inglorious milestone for the Democrat leadership in the U.S. Senate: it was the 3-YEAR ANNIVERSARY of the last time they passed a BUDGET MEASURE.-----Harry Reid has presented NO BUDGET TO THE SENATE. HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN AND WHERE ARE THE STORIES IN THE PRESS?

Last week, conventional republican wisdom was that no matter who Willard chose as a running mate, he could not possibly do worse than George McGovern. It seems they were wrong this time. This choice will Force a fight between the Tea Bagging party and the mainline republicans which can only serve to rip both apart. This choice shows that Romney already knows the race is lost.

Please read the constitution. Money bills must start in the House.

"Rosy assumptions" = GOP LIES

Unfortunately it would be simple if Ryan and his ilk had such ulterior motives. Their real objective is more scary: a plutrocracy in which a handful of people run both government policy and social issues their own way, with a vast underclass doing bit work. Many countries have this and, along with it, live with constant social unrest. The fact that the USA has had better times earlier, and that it's a mix of cultures, lends one to believe that the social unrest here would be historically high.

Please spare us this lamest of the lame talking points. We all know the Senate rules and power of the filibuster (except you, perhaps).

"Rosy assumptions"? That's funny. I don't recall the Globe expressing any such concerns about President Obama's plan for "hope and change." Oh, but that's probably because "hope and change" couldn't actually be called a plan, per se -- more of a fairy tale for the easily deceived. Bottom line: You don't like Paul Ryan's budget plan? At least he HAS a plan. Where's the Democrats'??

for someone who depended on SSI, Paul Ryan sure has a lack of empathy for others who are currently in his former condition ... Ryan is a shill for the super rich. great choice by Mittens

I think it's safe to say that any claim made by any politician is based on rosy assumptions. Facts become distorted, extrapolations are made, gross assumptions are made. Believe nothing any politician says, especially this time of year. The *only* reason they say something is to get votes - period. Sad, but true.

Obama's stimulus and healthcare plans relied on rosy assumptions, too. And as we are now seeing, those assumptions turned out to be incorrect. The national debt is ballooning, with little or no effort to cap it or even to slow down the rate of increase in debt. The Democrats are fine fellows to be criticizing a young, innovative Congressman on the Republican side. At least he's doing some thinking on the subject, unlike the liberals, who believe that raising taxes and borrowing ever more money is the answer to all questions.

The Democrats have a plan: keep on doing what they've always done, and hope no one notices we have two wheels in the ditch!

Overture, cut the lights This is it, the night of nights No more rehearsing or nursing a part We know every part by heart! Overture, night of nights This is it, we'll hit the heights And oh what heights we'll hit On with the show this is it!

COMMENT_to_Giermund: Obama's Health Reform Law cuts more than $700 BILLION from the MEDICARE budget, but strangely the media is QUIET about Obama. . . Also, the Barack Obama's re-election team can offer NOTHING in new initiatives, because as Obama WHISPERED to Putnin, "I can't say anything until after the November elections." Obama appeared to assume he is going to be re-elected! According to Obama's Aunt Zeituni Onyango, when questioned about living in subsidized housing and receiving government aid for about 9 years after her Deportatiuon Order _ her response was,"Americans are stupid." Obama appears to think the same.

kennedy - obviously you do not know anything about the power of the filibuster

And the alternative is what? At least it's a plan libs and not just wasting taxpayers time (and money) blaming everyone and everything under the sun for things. Look, the government has now PROVEN to us that it can't come through with jobs alright? Wake up and try something REALLY new and stop wasting our future.

WOW. I only got as far as the title of the article before concuding that the entire piece is a typical, biased Globe slam. I don't even have to read the rest of it.

salem - The House HAS produced a budget.

When, exactly, did reducing tax rates bring in more income?
