The killer of a prison guard who waived his right to appeal became the first man executed in South Dakota in five years, and only the second in more than half a century. Eric Robert, 50, had pleaded guilty in the April 12, 2011, slaying of a prison guard during a failed escape attempt and asked to be put to death. He died by lethal injection Monday night at the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls.
