New Yorkers impatient with pace of recovery

Residents’ anger prompts mayor to halt marathon

NEW YORK — Patience wore thin over gas shortages, power failures, and long lines for everything from buses to food handouts on Friday, as many parts of the New York City region struggled to recover from the devastation left by Hurricane Sandy.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg decided Friday afternoon to cancel the New York City Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, amid a growing backlash from residents and local politicians angered at the intent of staging a race when many New Yorkers are still dealing with severe hardships.

NY mayor Bloomberg either has extremely low intelligence or lives on a different planet. why on earth would he divert stretched out police, fire, ambulance services for a marathon ?  Why did new yorkers elect this dunce so many times?  I'm sure this was not his first big blunder.  Bloomberg is certainly no Christo.  The riots can't be far behind.

Speaking of low intelligence combined with ignorance.

There were good reasons to hold the marathon. The marathon brings in something like $350 millions to New York City. Aroung 20,000 runners from all over the world have spend thousands to get to New York, and rent accomodations and will now go home with nothing to show for it. And it might have gotten a few people's minds off the devastation for a few hours.

It wasn't good PR, though, and had to be called off. Whether that was the best decision, aside from the emotional factors, is debatable.

Your characterization of Bloomberg is so incredibly wrong that your comment is laughable.

Obama is at fault for the BP spill?

The liberal thinking of Mayor Bloomberg and Pres. Obama....who runs to a fund raiser the day after the murders of our ambassador and others and the mayor who wanted a marathon in NYC while people are without food, water and electricity and many have lost everything....this is leadership?????  Time for a change to Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan and keep  Scott Brown in MA.

Some people love to whine. A record-breaking storm hits America's most populous region and some with even minor problems think they should have first priority on whatever aid is available.

People are different, so they react differently to devastating situations such as this. There are those who immediately start begging for help and complain bitterly if they're not next in line. Other people just sit and wait for someone to show up.

There are others, though, who are already starting to recover their lives. It may be just small things like looking for the salvagable in the ruins of thier house, or making plans for tomorrow and the future. They aren't just sitting and waiting. They're saving themselves as best they can. They, too, will receive help from the rest of us, but recovery depends on those who don't just sit and wait, and complain.
