Ballot Questions

Legalizing marijuana in two states will put federal law, DEA to the test

NEW YORK — Washington state and Colorado set up a showdown with federal authorities by legalizing recreational use of marijuana in votes on Tuesday.

The outcomes for those ballot measures were a milestone for persistent, but often thwarted, activists who for decades have pressed the causes of drug decriminalization.

This AP piece doesn't mention the Massachusetts ballot measure, which passed with ~63% support: it would eliminate state criminal and civil penalties for the MEDICAL use of marijuana by qualifying patients. I find that an acceptable use, having watched my father suffer via cancer. Will the MA statute be challenged in court, due to federal statute?

Buyer's Remorse

Good for Washington State. Sounds like they got it right. If marijuana didn't have the stigma that it does common sense would dictate that it should be regulated and taxed, similar to alcohol. It's already widely used and easy to get. When you look at the adverse outcomes from alcohol versus marijuana use, or abuse, if anything alcohol should be banned.
