CAIRO — Protests erupted across Egypt on Friday, as opponents of President Mohammed Morsi clashed with his supporters on a presidential edict that gave him unchecked authority and polarized a divided nation while raising a specter, the president’s critics charged, of a return to autocracy.
In an echo of the uprising 22 months ago, thousands of protesters chanted for the downfall of Morsi’s government in Cairo, while others ransacked the offices of the president’s former party in Suez, Alexandria, and other cities.

In Egypt, we must strive to ensure that the forces of reason and democracy triumph over those of autocracy and religion. But this true throughout North Africa, Israel, Iran, much of the Middle East, parts of SE Asia, and on bad days, even parts of the US. Islam itself is not the enemy, the enemy are self-righteous adherents of all religions who combine their 'faith' with the human lust for authority and deduce they have the right to control the lives of others.

Amen.
And WHO gave Mohammed Morsi and the anti-Israel Muslim Brothethood Absolute Authority?
Why that would be America's CLUELESS Liberal President, Barack Hussein Obama and his equally CLUELESS Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

President asks for trust after taking absolute authority
In the US that headline refers to Barack Hussein Obama, who states, like Mohammed Morsi, that the election gave him a MANDATE to become a DICTATOR.
You sir, are deranged.

"...Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, the movement he once helped lead, both frustrated with their inability to build consensus, have been accused of conveniently dismissing critics of all types as loyalists of the former government...."
Wow! looks like these guys got a hold of someone else's Playbook.

Really, was there even any doubt that this would happen? First, the Christians will have to watch their backs and then the various Islamic factions will be after each other. We have to stop sending foreign aid. We are the enablers in all of this by supply the ruling faction with money for weapons.

This is what happens when conservatives take control of government! Religious ideology leads the way! (Although the Egyptian judiciary is known for it's corruption and the judges were all Mubarak leftovers.)
Bot Obama said TMB and Morsi are moderates...
"Another article in Morsi’s decree, that gives him broad powers to confront unspecified threats — including to ‘‘the revolution’’ — has played into decades-old fears of the Brotherhood as an insular, authoritarian movement shaped by decades as an underground secret society." __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The comments so far assume a cynical, worst-case interpretation of Morsi's actions. Perhaps they're right, but my sense is that it is too early to conclude the worst about his intentions. In any case, we should be able to easily understand the decades-old fear of the Brotherhood because we have seen something similarly insular, authoritarian, and secret, operating in the state of Mass for lo these many decades. Thankfully, Parochialism is not longer ascendant after the constant and serial number of scandals we have seen over the past decade.
