WASHINGTON — For the first time in days, President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner spoke by phone Wednesday about the fiscal cliff that threatens to knock the economy into recession, raising the prospect of fresh negotiations to prevent tax increases and spending cuts set to kick in with the new year.
Officials provided no details of the conversation, which came on the same day the president, hewing to a hard line, publicly warned congressional Republicans not to inject the threat of a government default into the already complex issue.

Comments
We all know taxes are going higher, either by increased rates or limiting deductions, the issue is whether the tough decisions on cutting spending will be made or not. The Democrats want to sidestep that because it is always unpopular and they thrive on popularity and celebrity, not what's best for the country and our children's future. Even in his second and final term, Obama would have to have courage to do what needs to be done and I just don't see him doing it. He is too much of a wimp and guided by what Oprah or Al Sharpton has to say.
