‘Serious differences’ put talks at standstill

WASHINGTON — Republicans aren’t budging on tax rates, and Democrats are resisting steps like raising the eligibility age for Medicare. Negotiations on averting a year-end fiscal train wreck combining big automatic tax hikes and sweeping spending cuts again appear stalled.

There are less than three weeks before the government could careen off this ‘‘fiscal cliff,’’ but the chief GOP negotiator, House Speaker John Boehner, Republican of Ohio, said Wednesday that ‘‘serious differences’’ remain between him and President Obama after an exchange of offers and a pair of conversations this week.

This is so ridiculous....ther Pubs refuse a tax increase for the wealthy, but instead off cuts in our most vulnerable population, the elderly. Please...give it up. The wealthy are much more able to "survive" with a small tax increase. It is survival here that we are talking about. I'm so sick of the GREED mentality that seems like a contagion in this country. Cut benefits for the needy so the rich can continue to enjoy their privilege. And none of that hard work bs, because millions of Americans work hard, very hard and can barely eke out an existence. Greed is the new wave and will continue to feed and grow until it eats us all up. Merry christmas, Happy Holidays and more.
