Honestly, what is the best we can hope for, the return of the old Assault Weapons ban legislation passed and then expired, it is not day old bread, it is decades old bread. I do not think the somewhat more meaningful portions of the bill will get thru the House - requiring background checks and waiting periods for those guns sold at trading shows. But none of this would have had any impact on the Newtown shootings - we are all familiar with those facts. Movement forward on mental health issues - have you Read your own privately issued health insurance policy lately - if there is one area that insurers quickly cap visits and costs - it is for mental health issues - they see it as an absolute loss leader and big insurance will fight - like - hell against upping the minimum coverages they currently offer. But if we are interested in feel good legislation, we need only look locally - does anyone recall Bartley - Fox and the mandatory minimums of one year in jail for use of a gun in any crime?? Do you recall in Massachusetts, how the judges, prosecutors and jailers all ran as fast as they could for their own parochial reasons? Such a grand idea that had so little support. If you want to curb gun violence, hand guns in the city or crazies running amok - there is only one real solution - and this country has no stomach for it.
