Gun-permit owners’ map draws ire

NEW YORK — A newspaper’s interactive map listing the names and addresses of gun permit holders in two New York counties has drawn a gathering avalanche of outrage this week.

As word spread across social media, thousands left comments expressing disbelief and anger at the map, compiled from publicly available information on handgun permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties and published online by The Journal News, a newspaper based in White Plains, N.Y., and owned by Gannett Co.

It sounds like a good idea to me. Considering the protest, many of the gun owners were embarrassed. Maybe the embarrassment will cause some of them to disarm.

These are public records. It's obvious to me that nearly 80,000 gun owners who are attacking Piers Morgan don't believe in freedom of speech. Now we have these New York idiots who resent public records being public.

A lot of gun owners seem to be dangerous to our society for other reasons than guns.

Seems like some people would like to know, for example, would not a parent like to know that his child is visitng a friend's house where there are guns?

Wonder what kind of illegal and dangerous substance who-cares has in his/her house. Like is he or she a boat owner, and is there a flare gun whose purpose is to seek emergency assistance stored on the property someplace?  Or what about a machete used to cut brush?  Or a pepper spray cannister used for self protection?  All probably legal devices to own, but also each and every one can be dangerous if played with by a kid.  Would who-cares like his/hr name published in the local blatsheet because he/she is idiotic and scaredy enough to try and protect him/herself with a pepper spray can?

In an earlier article, it said that the specific newspaper had published substantially the same information five or six years ago, without much of a ruckus.  I guess timing makes a difference.

C'mon, Globe, let's get something like this for Massachusetts.  Are you ready to take the heat?

I'd like to see a link to anything that they might have done in the past that mirrored this.  I would tend to doubt there was even remotely enough detail in an earlier study to point at individuals who were permitted.  Also, just for your info...... there is a law in MA that prohibits the access of information on permit holders or gun owners through the FoIA. Information can be sought on individuals only for investigative reasons by LEO's, etc.

Now here's a durned good example of immature nitwits who call themselves journalists have plaintly run amok.  One hopes there is no death or injury that results from this nonsense of listing gun permit holders on a map of where those holders have an address.  The idiotic editors of this puupsheet (the globe doesn't allow the word po*p in this message board) even noted in a story quoted by the Glob that not every person listed on the map is a known gun owner, just that the person holds a permit (though how many people will get gun permits without owning a gun is a question).  This nonsensical journal news is an over the top example of the news media out of control, and you can be sure that the idiots who run it will scream 'First Amendment' if anyone challenges their storification.  Yes, this incident angers me, and I am not a gunowner any more, and I don't believe in an absolute 2nd Amendment right. I also don't believe in an absolute First Amendment right especially when it protects morons like the crew that wastes a wood product in White Plains, NY.

Very logical post.  I'll make a prediction that this little project will completely blow up on that the reporters, the editors and anyone else in the chain over there.  This is beyond any 3rd rail topic I've run into in quite some time.
