Suspect in Aurora movie theater killings due back in court

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — The suspect in the Colorado movie theater killings will return to court this week for a hearing that might be the closest thing to a trial.

James Holmes, a former neuroscience graduate student, is charged with killing 12 people and injuring 70 by opening fire in a theater in the Denver suburb of Aurora last July.

Generally, I do NOT like the death penalty.  But my feelings are ripped in two when confronted with an alleged perpetrator like Holmes.  Let's assume the government has a case the height of Everest against him, it becomes my task as a human being to determine whether he should live or die if I am on the jury.  My yardstick is usually the question would I be able to pull the trigger, tighten the noose or inflict the injection that kills.  My answer is No I don't think I could.  I simply cannot kill.  We let even insects out in the house IF possible.  My pet cat which I ADORED was about 16 years old and so weak she could not stand up.  I KNEW what had to be done but I put that in the veteranarian's hands as I turned her over to do the dastardly deed.  I STILL feel sick about that but what was the alternative?

Now we are talking about a human life and that human life took other innocent life.  Could I kill him as a just payment for what evil he has done?  The only way I could kill is if it were in self defense or if I concentrate on the crime the killer has committed and nothing else. ALL those innocent human beings gone allegedly for now killed by Holmes before their time makes me cringe and howl in anger.  BUT could I execute him?  Answer:  I still do not truly know.  I am glad I am not the one, if he is found guilty, to have to do it.  These are difficult times and we are faced with difficult issues.

Could I write a law banning assault rifles and huge magazine clips WITHOUT eradicating the Second Amendment allowing decent people to enjoy guns? -- YES, in a heartbeat!
