NRA says White House is demonizing Second Amendment

WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite fresh opposition from the National Rifle Association, the Obama administration is assembling proposals to curb gun violence that would include a ban on sales of assault weapons, limits on high-capacity ammunition magazines and universal background checks for gun buyers.

Sketching out details of the plan Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden said he would give President Barack Obama a set of recommendations by next Tuesday. The NRA, one of the pro-gun groups that met with Biden during the day, rejected the effort to limit ammunition and dug in on its opposition to an assault weapons ban, which Obama has previously said he will propose to Congress.

Comments

The real key to this article is in Biden's statement that indicates no recommendations will eliminate future mass shootings, but they will diminish the "probability".  Pure political blather.

Consensus?  Since when does this country operate on a "consensus" announced by a VP after he has held meetings with select groups?  Silly me, I thought we did this sort of thing via our Congress, you know, to make it legal.  Who cares what he "recommends" to the President, unless it is for the President to once again act outside of our framework of government by issuing an Executive Decree?

Contrary to the opinion held by some, the Constitution is the framework for our government.  Not only are our leaders flying in the face of the 2nd Ammendment, now they are going to ignore the process by which laws are created.

This is political theater, Dianne Feinstein has a bill prepared to introduce that includes an AWB and much more.  It is very apparent the President does not believe that legislation will pass, so he is setting the stage for unilateral action on his part.

Anyone who thinks this is "Gun Control" is sadly mistaken, this is actually the first stages of disarmament.  The President is following the script written in Canada and Australia.  Oh, and for those of you who think that Piers Morgan and his constant quoting of the low British murder is so wonderful, be aware that Britian's violent crime rate is over 5 times that of the U.S.  No one has the ability to defend themselves since their wonderful gun laws went into effect.

The only proper place for any "conversation" about disarmament of the people is in Congress, not a Vice Presidential conference meeting.

Some have said a "tipping point" may have been reached.  I am afraid they are right, a tipping point that might include rebellion within this country, that no one in their right mind wants.

You obfuscate and emply hyperbole to make your point. Which seems to be that any kind of gun control or legislation restricting one's access to military style assault weapons along with the ammo and high capacity magazines is somehow equivalent to "disarmament" by our duly elected officals in Washington. Many of us disagree with such a perposterous argument. An argument which is over the top with admonishments regarding our freedoms and the attempts of Obama and Biden to take them away from us. Nonsense. And you know it. Unless you are just in denial and or, possibly a "soveriegn white male" who has his own ideas of what rights the constitution grants us all. Such as the right to live our lives without being shot by some lunatic with a military weapon meant solely for killing people at a high rate of efficiency. I know, I was in the Army during Vietnam and have seen the true purpose of such weapons up close and personal. You need to protect yourself you say? Fine, there is a wide variety of weapons that will more than adequetly protect you from the kinds of threats one is likely to encounter in our peace time society. It is time to bring back the AWB. Get over it.

Why is it that the loudest mouths on the NRA side of the argument are so keen to access "weapons of war"? As a sportsman, expert marksman, hunter and outdoorsman, I have no need whatsoever for a Bushmaster, AK-47 or for that matter any other weapon of war. The really dark side of the NRA lunatic fringe argument is that these people want access to weapons of war to be able to attack their own government, if ever (in their "sound" judgement) they overstep their bounds. These people are just like Timothy McVeigh and his paranoid, knuckle-dragging "militia" cohorts. Smart and truly patriotic people know better. I don't believe that for one minute a group of former colonists, assembled into a patriotic militia by their government and armed with muzzle-loading, single-shot muskets would ever support the free circulation and ownership of semi-automatic weapons of war capable of firing 60 5.56 or 7.62 high-powered bullets in under a minute.

I don't remember seeing a comment from History until after the Newtown shooting. He came out of the woodwork to defend gun ownership with extreme views and arrogant pronouncements. ("I am omniscient; listen to me.") He's very off-putting and does more harm than good for his "cause." He's so predictable that I just automatically ignore his postings, including the one below.

Anyone else see the report on NBC's today show that indicated that there was never an AR 15 brought into the Newtown school?

By concentrating on a minor issue or two, you trivialize the entire discussion and miss the overall importance. It's a deflection, and I suspect that's your purpose.

And I should add that it's nothing new. That was reported in the Globe within a day.

the only thing any of this will do is limit the #'s not if someone dies... so it seems like a body count issue not a life or death issue..... biden i know your a fool just my opinion but even 1 death is to many... yes i know it's a great time to act the hero and such..... but face facts.... shooting in conn... guns involved yes, poor safe guards of legal guns, very poor parental judgement.. a child very isolated and on dailly drugs... so start with the big factors, gun safety, rules to follow as an owner, try to deal with the drug issue.... if you don't you aren't even getting the ability to find out if it is a real factor or not.... sorry what is it then top much for you guys tied up in the drug industry as i see no o ther reason to skip the menatl health and daily drugs prescribed..
