Bail set at $1m for in-store stabbing

FREEHOLD — Bail was set at $1 million for a New Jersey man accused of stabbing a stranger about a dozen times as she pushed her 5-month-old baby in a stroller at a Bed Bath & Beyond store. Prosecutors said Tyrik Haynes, 19, of Middletown is also accused of setting fire last month to a cat. The stabbing victim remained hospitalized Saturday in critical but stable condition. Her child was not injured.

Medal returned to WWII veteran

RALEIGH — A North Carolina man is getting his Purple Heart back, almost 70 years after he mailed it home and never
saw it again. George Hemphill, 90, will receive his Purple Heart medal in a ceremony Sunday in Rutherfordton. Hemphill got the award for fighting in 1944 during World War II in France. A man bought Hemphill’s Purple Heart in 2000 in an antique store in Columbia, S.C. He held on to it until a friend put him in touch with Purple Hearts Reunited, which found Hemphill in Union Mills.

Two accidentally shot at gun show

RALEIGH — Officials said that two people were accidentally shot and wounded at a gun show at the North Carolina state fairgrounds Saturday. The Dixie Gun and Knife Show is a quarterly event that usually draws thousands of people to the fairgrounds, which is operated by the state agriculture department. An agency spokesman said a 12-gauge shotgun discharged while its owner unzipped its case for a law enforcement officer to check it at an entrance.
