GOP leaders look ready to accede, for short term

Political reality may force a more pragmatic tone

WASHINGTON — President Obama’s aggressive inaugural address on Monday presented congressional Republicans with a stark choice over the next two years: accommodate the president’s agenda on immigration, guns, energy, and social programs and hope to take the liberal edge off issues dictated by the White House, or dig in as the last bulwark against a reelected Democratic president and accept the political risks of that hard-line stance.

As Obama’s second term begins, Republican leaders appear ready to accede at least in the short term on matters like increasing the debt limit.

"Senator Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, the Senate majority leader, vowed Tuesday to put on the floor any gun control measures passed by the Judiciary Committee, inching closer to another showdown with the House." What if bill doesn't get out of the Judiciary Committee? The real SHOWDOWN is still with Senate Democrats. NY Times and Boston Globe avoids mentioning that Senate Democrats are just as divided as House Republicans on many issues. News media doesn't report that Harry Reid has kept hundreds of bills off the Senate floor....And if the news media continues to claim that House Republicans are "Divided", then they will simply "Unite" in oppposition to all Senate and White House bills.

No wonder people don't read newspapers anymore. What's this doing in the news section instead of opinion?

And the tea baggers get rejected again, back off, and whine.

My money is on more hard line stances whenever possible, especially in the House. This may not be good for the country but is the only way for them to get re-elected, which is what matters to them most.

If one attended local GOP meetings they would find that moderates are again returning to the Party and seeking to dislodge those elements that gained control in the off year elections.  Intelligent R's recognize that this hardline extremist position is a loser.  One can only hope that the adults are finally regaining control of the Party.
