Gun ban supporters expect tough fight

Feinstein asserts most Americans are behind law

WASHINGTON — Senator Dianne Feinstein, who is leading the push to restore an assault weapon ban, acknowledged on Sunday that the effort faces tough odds to pass Congress because of the powerful gun lobby, but she said most Americans are behind the idea.

Feinstein, a California Democrat, introduced a bill on Thursday that would prohibit 157 specific weapons and ammunition magazines that have more than 10 rounds. The White House and fellow Democrats have doubts that the measure can pass because lawmakers facing reelection battles might fear pro-gun voters and the National Rifle Association.

Can somebody tell me why the high capacity magazie is such a hot buttom issue? She'll go along with a ten round mag but not thirty. Magazines can be changed in less than two seconds. Don't tell me she thinks someone is gonna tackle an AR toting suspect between mag changes? What a waste of resources and time when they should be concentrating on the mental illness aspect to the story. I also have no problem with background checks and more thorough licensing requirements. Isn't this the same Senator that carried a revolver for her own personal safety? Ever see how many rounds a revolver can fire? Fast guys can fire 6, reload, and fire 6 more in less than 3 seconds.

Rich:  Really?  You want to maintain a national database of every person a mental health professional says MIGHT be dangerous?  You realize that this is not just in regards to gun ownership?  That database could be used in all sorts of ways, many of them detrimental to the people in it.

More thorough licensing requirements?  Do tell me how the vast majority of states have managed not to wind up like High Noon without having ANY licensing requirements?  The reason is simple, only honest people go get licenses.  The criminals and insane do not bother with piddly stuff like licenses.

The fallacy in MA is that the gun laws have driven the violent crime and homicide down to the lowest in the nation.  That is pure bs.  MA's rates have followed the national trends, they started out a lower point and have gotten to where they are right along with the national trend.

There is no epidemic of crime or shootings.  Mass shootings have hit the spotlight, but to call them "epidemic" when they occur one to two years apart is a stretch.  BTW, who exactly defined "any shooting over 4 people is a mass shooting"?  You can bet it is someone interested in banning guns.  It used to be "multiple victims", but mass shooting is much more theatrical.

The ten vs thirty thing?  Many anti gunners are using the "baby steps" theory.  You will note that Dianne was just waiting for the Sandy Hook tragedy.  She, or someone like her, will wait for another tragedy, and declare "We need to tighten up our gun laws even more!"  And from the looks of your willingness to go along with more licensing, you will give in some more.

Simple question:  Would you negotiate and find common ground with a cannibal in regards as to what is for dinner?

Never said anything about a national registry but did you ever try to have someone hospitalized who really needed it? Getting someone help is not easy and made a lot harder by lawyers and ACLU types that believe their civil rights are more important than their mental health. We have licensing now but it's too inconsitent. Shall issue vs. may issue. These things need to be standardized. If more people realize a 30 round mag doesn't mean fully automatic they may realize the left is selling them a crock. Ignorance of weapons and their capabilities are our biggest impediment to constructive discussion.
