Early pact made on US immigration overhaul

Plan combines enforcement and citizenship path

A bipartisan group of senators has agreed on a set of principles for a sweeping overhaul of the immigration system, including a pathway to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants that would hinge on progress in securing the borders and ensuring that foreigners leave the country when their visas expire.

The senators were able to reach a deal by incorporating the Democrats’ insistence on a single comprehensive bill that would not deny eventual citizenship to illegal immigrants, with Republican demands that strong border and interior enforcement had to be clearly in place before Congress could consider legal status for illegal immigrants.

a - m - n - e - s - t - y: any way you arrange the letters, this is still the result.  The constant flood of low skill / no skill workers at the bottom end guarantee steady wage erosian for the last of native born blue color workers.  A big influx of foreign educated high skill workers devalues the high costs of educating American kids at our over priced colleges and universities.

A broad question without the nauances suggested by CarlontheCape:  does this bipatrisan "set of principles for a sweeping overhaul of the immigration system" have any set of limits for its future?  There are now allegedly 11 million people in this nation as illegal aliens, with the senators from two parties suggesting secure borders, mandatorily departing visa holders and eventual citizenship for some of the illegal aliens.  Lots of pandering, it might seem, amidst a set of quandries that largely defy solution.  These principles are just marvey, but the bipartisanship leaves one wondering how come six senators can forge strong principles to change decades old practices that have created the current immigration mess?  What is different about the play (or is it a pipedream) forged by McCain, Schumer, et. al.?

You know what is different already.  In fact, it's alluded to in the article, if you read it carefully.  A significant portion of the American electorate wants immigration change, and that portion did NOT vote for the GOP.  So, the more of the GOP's reps are softening on this issue, where before they wouldn't even DISCUSS change.

add to the secure borders, put a stop to anchor babies, they have in Calif. motels that cater to bringing foreigners to this

country and stay here until the baby is born, so that child is an American citizen with all the benefits.  They go back to their own

country and most are from China...cost maybe $30 or $40 thousand dollars...but then they are eligible for college benefits, welfare benefits later on in life if they come back to the USA.  and then can bring their family members over later also.......

And then get rid of the criminals, like the gangbanger that is on trial for murder (who was suppose to be deported ) and Ivor that has supposed to be deported 4 times.  I agree our immigration laws are a farce....and will always be, because they do not enforce the law.   So in 15 yrs expect 20 million more illegals waiting for amnesty.  How soon will they be able to collect welfare benefits, medicaid etc.  the law was you had to wait 8 yrs  after you became citizen to collect welfare, not step off the boat and head to the welfare office...

go to welcometousa.gov, they can collect pretty much anything. People will wake up when we can no longer sustain this fiscally, until then, all is well.

As the Globe headline says "EARLY PACT..". Wait until Barack Obama puts his 2 cents in. Let's see how much "negotiation and art of the deal" occurs as columnist tom Keane thinks Obama is capable of doing.
