Gabrielle Giffords appeals for gun control

WASHINGTON (AP) — She uttered just 80 halting words. But her presence was powerful.

Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, shot in the head by a Tucson gunman in 2011, opened the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing on gun violence in dramatic fashion Wednesday.

I'm at a loss as to what legitimate reason LaPierre has to believe that background checks are not warranted every time a gun is purchased anywhere by anyone.  Because the government doesn't prosecute people who skirt the check, or lie on a piece of paperwork?  Is he kidding?  That's a different problem, not a legitimate rationale for no background checks.  He appears to be so downright paranoid about the camel getting its nose under the tent that he just can't bring himself to agree with things that make sense, resulting in his looking like someone who is not smart enough to conceive of any circumstance other than status quo.

I'm inclined to agree.  Perhaps it's the years of living with these regs in MA?  I'm honestly not sure but I think that a background check isn't too much to go through to purchase a gun.  When I purchase, I actually feel worse for the dealer.  It's a lot of paperwork for both of us and it's likely he has to do the same thing many times each day.  What concerns me now is the privacy issue.  Looking only at the recent implemtation of EMR, it's clear that the details of every one of my more recent purchases along with the other information included at the time of the transaction is just a few errant keystrokes away from the wrong set of eyes.
