Postal Service to cut Saturday mail

WASHINGTON (AP) — The financially struggling US Postal Service said Wednesday it will stop delivering mail on Saturdays but continue to disburse packages six days a week, an apparent end-run around an unaccommodating Congress.

The service expects the Saturday mail cutback to begin the week of Aug. 5 and to save about $2 billion annually, said Postmaster General and CEO Patrick R. Donahoe.

As long as costs are reasonable, why not provide the USPS with significant federal funding (and also end that absurd future pension funding requirement)? We don't demand that highways or schools be profitable, do we?

@SeriouslyGuys: That is  the way to go, as I see it. As far as all this crowing I hear about the private carriers pulling USPS's usefulness out from under them, CAREFUL! Should our Postal Service collapse, this Nation would be in deep, deep, doo-doo. The "privates" can't now  and never will operate as well as the USPS has. Ah, I feel better now.

Save 2 billion a year; how long did 2 billion last us in the Middle East adventures of the past 10 years?

Until the Congress takes action to fix the problem with a deficit of 5.5 billion a year for pensions, they will never get out of the hole. What? Congress take action?  Dream on.

I will stop shopping on Saturday and Sunday when this goes into effect. My veterans check always comes in on Saturday. That means that I don't get any money until Monday. This is a stupid move. Why don't they just go up on the postal prices and leave us poor folks alone.

This has to be republican driven. Another good reason to keep voting Democrate!

Why don't you get your check deposited into your bank account and get an ATM card??? Then your check is in your account at midnight Saturday morning, and you can access your money 24/7.

I doubt that your Veternan's check always come on a Saturday, and even so, go direct deposit. BTW screenname 713, direct deposits occur on business days.

How come packages will still be delivered on Saturday? Isn't that putting business  ahead of the common man's needs? If this happens, I will stop buying online and stop buying stamps completely.

Because the money is in packages, not flyers from Lowes.
