Senators seek deal on gun sale background checks

Could provide boost to key part of Obama’s plan

WASHINGTON — A bipartisan quartet of senators, including two National Rifle Association members and two with ‘‘F’’ ratings from the potent firearms lobby, are quietly trying to find a compromise on expanding the requirement for gun sale background checks.

A deal, given a good chance by several participants and lobbyists, could add formidable political momentum to one of the key elements of President Obama’s gun control plan. Currently, background checks are required only for sales by the nation’s 55,000 federally licensed gun dealers, but not for gun show, person-to-person sales, or other private transactions.

Here's a solution: universal background checks with an option to apply for expedited per-approval like people can get to bypass airport security. Not universal registration that NRA seems to fear and it's optional. So when you go to the gun show, it's like going to the airport.

Here's a question:  Anyone know exactly what a "universal background check" really is?  Bueller, Bueller?

I hear this term tossed around by everyone, but I have yet to hear anybody say exactly what it is.  I know what a NICS check is, what does a Universal Background Check include?  Criminal record?  Mental health records?  Underwear size?  Latte or Grande?

How about everyone quit saying we ought to agree to doing them, until we all know what they are?  What a concept, huh, Skelitor?
