HOUSTON — Carnival Cruise Lines has canceled a dozen more voyages aboard the Triumph and acknowledged that the ship had been plagued by other mechanical problems in the weeks before an engine-room fire left it powerless in the Gulf of Mexico.
The company’s announcement on Wednesday came as the Triumph was being towed to a port in Mobile, Ala., with more than 4,000 people on board, some of whom have complained to relatives that conditions on the ship are dismal and that they have limited access to food and bathrooms.

This whole situation is a major cockamamie idiocy, with the idea that Carnival is canceling a dozen Triumph voyages as bizarre a part of the story as anything. The major wonder is why a company with more than 20 ships flying its actively offered for cruises could not either dispatch one of the other three ships it has based in a Gulf of Mexico port or at least charter one or two ships to meet the Triumph and take off as many passengers as wanted to depart. Safety? What kind of illnesses is Carnival offering these 4200 passengers, never mnd the crew members, with excrement and other sewage flowing around the Triumph uncontrolled. An offer of $500, a voyage refund, and worst of all, another cruise as compensation? Wait until Carnival's insurers start dealing with the law suits sure to be filed due to this badly handled mishap.
