As cutbacks loom, Obama tries to prod GOP to action

Says economy and thousands of jobs in peril

WASHINGTON — Days away from another fiscal crisis and with Congress on vacation, President Obama began marshaling the powers of the presidency Tuesday to try to shame Republicans into a compromise that could avoid further self-inflicted job losses and damage to the fragile recovery. So far, Republicans were declining to engage.

To turn up the pressure on the absent lawmakers, Obama warned in calamitous terms of the costs to military readiness, domestic investments, and vital services if a ‘‘meat-cleaver’’ approach of indiscriminate, across-the-board spending cuts takes effect March 1. Surrounding him in a White House auditorium were solemn, uniformed emergency responders, invited to illustrate the critical services at risk.

Is it too much for readers to expect to know from the times and globe that the sequester was obama's idea? that obama hasn't given a budget to congress in 3 years, that obama does not talk even to dems in congress. The question is how does obama spend his time besides playing golf, arranging parties and scheming about how to steal money from people who have been successful.

Yes, it is too much--since the times and globe never print news unfavorable to their favored party.

He won't cut the bloated Obamacare expenses. It's the old PLOY to stir public support for ALL government spending by shutting down vital services first.  And Mr. Obama's calls for "tax reform" are always just tax inceases in disguise.  AND he will have spent more on Hurrican Sandy than most of the sequester cuts. And by the way, the NY times didn't tell you that those "Cuts" to the failed Head Start have already been restored by a $100 million funding disguised as Sandy relief program

Congrats to Miker 6 for a directly-spoken, accurate evaluation of the antics from the oval office.

If this issue is so important to the administration, why is the President on a PR tour to whip up public opinion with scare tactics instead of arranging a summit with Congress to find a compromise that everyone can support? Let's not turn this into another us-them, democrat-republican, liberal-conservative mudslinging contest. Everyone in Washington contributed to this mess in so many ways, no one has any moral high ground here. A little less politics and rhetoric and more roll your sleeves up and do your job, please.

Been there done that, he's THROUGH.  He will take his case to the American people and unemployment WILL be sure to rise because Republcians are the obstrutionist racisits that they are.  The  Republicans can kiss 2014 goobye. They WILL lose the House, Democrats will keep the Senate and then some and of course FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY this nation will be rid of most of its worst albatross since the Civil War and none to soon.  To lose those rancid malcontents may just save the nation.

"Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule—and both commonly succeed, and are right." - H. L. Mencken

He has as much chance of turning these disgusting, intractable, low information Republicans to change their tune as he has turning my cat into a dog.  They are utterly without conscience, utterly without caring and they are humanoids without patriotism.  They know one thing and one thing only and that is to stick it to our first black president.  This fuels them, it gives me purpose and the country be damned.  They simply do not care.  They turned the racist southern Dixcrats of old into Tea Party Republicans and now it is biting the ENTIRE Republican Party in the posterior.

The rest of our electorate is NOT that stupid that the president constantly hammering into their heads that THIS is what the Republicans want.  The president has time and time and time and time again sought compromise but there IS NO compromise with the tea baggie wing.  They are like cement because they simply do not care.  Their think their moral purpose is in ensuring the president get a bum rap.

Like the voter suppression they tried to use to steal the election their dream of a line of white Republican presidents will NOT work.  The demographics have changed as has the mentality of the American electorate and finally for the better.  The president needs to hammer away and reveal the truth of this dastardly, despicable and profane Republican Party.  IF the country heads into recession again, if unemployment ticks up because of the sequester there is NO ONE absolutely NO ONE to blame but Republicans.  They would rather the economy tank then for the president to get the kudos of doing the right thing.

Worse the country will suffer with major cuts to the defense sector.  We WILL be at more risk as the military gets walloped as do firemen, police, teachers and ALL those jobs that had once been the pride of a nation and kept us on top.  SHAME ON YOU Tea BAGGERS for not being smart enough to see the Republican Party is NOT your friend they are they are your enemy because they are about the top 2% and do not care if the rest of us live or die!

nrosen pegged the moron meter . . . again.

President Obama returned from a long weekend with his golfing buddies on Tuesday to take up his by now familiar political stand: If Republicans don't raise taxes in return for more spending, the world will end. We wish he'd stayed on the putting green.

President Barack Obama gave a press conference after the Supercommittee officially admitted it failed to reach an agreement to cut $1.2 trillion in budget spending over the next 10 years.  Obama told reporters he would veto any attempt to get rid of the automatic cuts which are set to kick in as a part of the sequester proposition, which will be triggered unless Congress reaches over the next year.

Does the Sequestor cut Presidential vacation and golfing funds?  Because then we'll see some action from our President.
