WASHINGTON — House Republicans, shrugging off rising pressure from President Obama, are resolutely opposing new tax increases to head off $85 billion in across-the-board spending reductions, all but ensuring the cuts will go into force March 1 and likely remain in place for months, if not longer.
Despite new calls from the White House on Wednesday to enact a combination of tax increases and cuts to postpone the so-called sequester, the House is moving forward on a legislative agenda that assumes deep and arbitrary cuts to defense and domestic programs — once considered unthinkable — will remain in place through the end of the year.

Shouldn't the story read "Democrats Refuse to Make Spending Cut"?
Maybe it should read"Corporations and millionaires refuse to reverse 60 years of tax cuts."
they just did get a tax hike. facts, try them
Everybody will pay for this political failure to accmmodate. This looming catasptrophe will insure that the republican right will go on the road singing "Id rather be right than be president!"

I have never seen more people happy to have their taxes increased than the last couple months with Deval and Obama. Amazing. Am I the only one living paycheck to paycheck?
You made the bed Obama now lie in it. You have gotten your way time after time and today you will not and it will hurt you politically.
Obama being exposed for what he is: a tax and spend liberal with no desire to work towards a solution. The most partisan President ever. Another great jobs report today too.
JAY LENO: Hey, over the weekend, President Obama, you know that, President Obama played golf with Tiger Woods. And Tiger said the president was a very good golfer for a guy who only plays five days a week. You know, so, that’s pretty good. [Laughter]
Actually, you know what the president’s handicap is? Anybody know? Doesn’t understand economics. That’s the handicap. But other than that, other than that, he’s fine. [Cheers, whistles, applause]
The great unrecovery just accelerated with more great unrotation out of stocks following today's February Philly Fed which just plunged from -5.8 to -12.5 on expectations of a positive print of +1. This was the worst print in 8 months, the biggest miss in 9 months, and the biggest two month drop in the New Orders index which crashed to -7.8 in 18 months.
"deep and arbitrary cuts"
Uh huh, Obama's cuts. Gotta remember, Obama is the one who specified what these cuts would be. Not the Republicans.
Arbitrary is a good word to describe Obama.
These "cuts" are less than 3% of the budget, and this character is telling us we have to suffer a loss of life threatening services? Mr. Arbitrary Obama should have done a better job picking his "cuts". But we all know this is how democrats rule, by terrifying citizens.
The American public hates Republicans in Congress, and 49% of them blame Congress for the sequester, compared to 31% who blame the Pres. As usual, the Repubs are mindless right wing buffoons who will take the blame for the cuts. Hey wacko Repubs - you LOST the election. Get over it losers.
