PACIFICA, Calif. — Two slick mile-long tunnels are undergoing final safety tests this month, poised to divert motorists away from an ocean cliff-hanging roadway dubbed Devil’s Slide south of San Francisco to a smooth, Alpine-like passageway unlike any other in the United States.
The $439 million project, paid with federal emergency funds, features massive exhaust fans, carbon monoxide sensors and a pair of 1,000-foot bridges soaring 125 feet above a grassy horse ranch. A series of 10 fireproof shelters are staggered between the double bores, and remote cameras dangle from the ceiling, monitored by an around-the-clock safety staff of 15.

Please alllow me to be the first to state the obvious, that the tunnels, being paid for with 'emergency funds' has theme-park like boulders, and is being built to reduce the 'threat' (sheesh!) of lost tourism money and to avoid slowing down to 25 mph.
Why not save some of that money for all of the kids about to lose educational endowments? This is an example of what the House of Reps is trying to get across to us. Lets stop and listen and, most of all, try critical, analytical thinking.
Theme park boulders rather than money for kids education. Unbelievable. Is there a Spenders Anonymous meeting coming up? Hope it's not the same night as the Blamers Ananymous meeting . . .
amirtillr's comments above are absolutely correct! What a shame the country's "leadership" doesn't lead, but continues to politic by throwing money we can't afford at projects that shouldn't be a high priority. Spend the money wisely and there will be more than enough. Operate the government efficiently and staggering defecits will become a thing of the past. However this requires a President who leads, not blames, which unfortunately we do not have. Cut spending. Solve the problem. Don't keep kicking the can down the road and pretending raising taxes is the only answer.

Not since the outrage of the so-called National Defense Highway System boondoggle have we seen such outrageously wasteful spending. Hundreds of billions of dollars were spent for “safe, efficient high speed road transportation” supposedly to allow Americans to drive from one place to another when, in fact, there were already roads readily available. This spending program, started under the profligate Eisenhower, fortunately was not “maintained” very well. Bridges have collapsed and potholes are as common as starlings thus proving that this was a bad idea from the start. I can personally testify that the roadbed for trains, especially between New Haven and NYC have reverted to the original design intent of the founding fathers. It is as blissfully uncomfortable as the first railroads must have been, thus a rolling triumphal return to the Founders’ intent. And this Lantos fellow…I clearly remember that he had a funny accent. He may not have been a citizen.
