WASHINGTON — After weeks of arguing constitutional fine points and citing rival statistics, senators wrangling over gun control saw and heard the anguish of a bereft father.
Neil Heslin, whose 6-year-old son, Jesse, was among those cut down at a Connecticut elementary school in December, asked the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday to ban assault weapons like the one that killed his child.

Of course all of our hearts go out to this man and the lose of his son.
But I do notice that Feinstein does not parade people who have defended their children with an AR15 or any gun in front of her kangaroo hearings.
The issue remains, exactly WHAT is going to be done to protect children other than toss the constitution out the window?
Feinstein is an old rigid bitty, she wanted an AWB in 94, she got it, it didn't work. Now she wants a massively expanded one, it is about her saving face. Nothing in her bill really protects kids at school. She disgusts me.
We can protect those kids without violating anyone's rights. It is called security.
You bring up some good points for discussion, but the other elephant in the room is that until someone commits an act of violence, there are practically no options for intervention. Consider the article about Jeremy Goulet; his family said he was a ticking time bomb. While there will still be spree killers who never come up from under the radar until it is too late, there is no lack of examples of people who display behaviours or ideations that predict a high potential for violence. Gun regulation, sensible or not, is in and of itself insufficient to address the risk. Ditto for turning schools into fortresses. Whether or not it is done in a sensible or reactionary manner, it isn't enough if root causes for spree violence are not addressed.
Regulation of a constitutional right does not equate with "throwing the Constitution out the window." To believe that massive firepower is some right that cannot be regulated is to be an extremist. If we can't do anything after this latest obscene tragedy, then I officially give up hope on this country.
Why should anyone be allowed to obtain a gun other than law enforcement and military personnel? Guns are for killing, be it animals or people, and target practice is to get better at it The 2nd ammendment was never meant to allow for the kinds of weapons we have now and the kind of killing they can be used for. End of story....
This country supports or creates massive violence and destruction around the world and when it strikes home everyone is appalled. How many have we killed in Iraq for no good reason?
