Ryan’s budget targets Obama accomplishments

Proposal mirrors spending plan he offered in 2012

WASHINGTON — Four months after Republicans suffered a convincing defeat in the presidential election, Representative Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin, the party’s vice presidential nominee, unveiled a spending-and-tax plan Tuesday that relies on the same lightning-rod proposals of his 2012 campaign to balance the budget in 10 years.

The Ryan plan — called the ‘‘Pathway to Prosperity’’ as it was in last year’s campaign — would cut spending by $4.6 trillion through 2023, largely by rolling back President Obama’s legislative accomplishments while also taking advantage of the savings they created.

Ryan's budget is a perfect example of why we as a country are so messed up.  Apparently elections don't decide ANYTHING.  This lack of progess to adjust and try to move forward is disgusting.   Politicians are constantly campaigning and plotting strategy. It's all about elections and to hell with government.  I can already see Republicans rubbing their hands gleefully and saying "We'll just continue to say No, and play games sequestoring and putting up fiscal red herring for 2 more years and then we'll WIN the Senate and life will be SOOO GOOD".

Kudos to Ryan for standing firm.  The "accomplishments" of this president are destroying our country, and Ryan is doing his best to save it, despite the election.  This is leadership, something that the president does not understand.  For you Obama groupies, please tell me exactly what he will cut to reduce the deficit.  You know as well as I do that he has no intention of cutting spending, his only goal is to grow the government (universal preschool????), and tax the wealthy down to size.  He has flatlined our economy, and put us on a collision cource with disaster, as our deficits grow unabated.  God Bless Paul Ryan.

Paul Ryan is a spokes person for a party that is going to extinguish itself over time. He is a idealogue who is so out of step with the principles of democracy. He is having his fun right now but his kind are going to ruin the Republican party.

The economy is flattened? You have any stocks? You read real estate news? Plus the deficit is being paid down at a greater rate than has happenec since WW2.

Ryan is a fool unless his plan is to split the GOP into two parts.

The Feds now borrow 40 cents out of every dollar they spend.

For those not skilled in economics, that means they do not collect enough taxes to cover their spending, so they borrow money to fund programs they have passed.

This is NOT about paying for things already purchased, blah, blah, blah.  This is an ongoing process, year after year in our government.

The term "budget cut" means exactly that.  They reduce the "budget".  But that does not mean they are even close to balancing it, nor does it mean that they are close to even starting to pay off the debt.  The "cuts" only mean we will go into deeper debt a bit slower.

Obama wants to raise taxes.  We already have the highest corporate tax rate in the world.  He cannot raise fuel taxes, they are as high as they can go without further crippling our economy.  He could tax alcohol some more, and get the drinkers really upset, a sure way to do in the democratic party.  Cigarettes?  Any more tax on them and people really will quit smoking, so not a good idea.

So, his idea is to tax "the rich".  But we are spending about $10B per day, $4B of it borrowed money.  One does not have to be a finance major to understand "the rich" cannot be taxed at a $4B per day rate, they do not have that much money.

Ever wonder why they are targeting Social Security?  It pretty much applies to everyone.  Sounds like it is fair.  We all need to suffer equally.  Nah, not even close.  All the pork that was attached to various bills was put there for a reason. The reason is that it garnered favor for that legislator from a small group of people, read "votes".  Legislators need to put together various blocks of voters to get reelected.  It is NOT just a Rep vs Dem situation.  Many people are in the "undecided" category.  If a legislator panders to them by getting some "pork", he secures votes.

Social Security is one of the few places that they can go after without losing their protected interests.  They will just make everyone equally mad, so they will all still have an equal footing when it comes election time.  Besides, all of them have very lucrative government retirements, so what do they care about SS?

Ryan is taking the needed approach.  Actual spending needs to be stopped, not reductions in further budget increases.

I am not of the opinion that any taxes should be raised until the govt can demonstrate that it has stopped it's wasteful spending on useless projects.  Just one example:  A million dollars to work on the meal plan for a future Mars mission?  Are you kidding me?

One more, I cannot help myself!  Almost 30 million to teach Morrocans how to design pottery?  Really?  We cannot afford this.

For those of you who will say, 30 million is a drop in the bucket, 1 million will not help. . . .

They have a saying in Washington DC:

A million here, a million there, pretty soon you are talking about real money.

Plus, look at the corporate jet loophole.

High corporate tax rate? Google alone hides a billion dollars a year in overseas accounts. Facebook-1.1 billion in profits, no federal or state tax, 429 million refund.

Hey Pal, don't forget that it was Congress, comprised of Reps AND Dems that passed the tax laws allowing those sorts of things to happen.  People conveniently forget that many congressmen have "investments", ahem....

I'll take Ryan a little more seriously when his budget proposal includes limiting the salaries of Representatives and Senators to minimum wage (yeah, and the Pres, VP and Judiciary).

This tea bag formula of defunding universal care boils down to telling the nation to drop its pants and bend over.  Drs. Boehner and Ryan have got an alternative to Obamacare.  Believe it or not this earnestly advocated but eyepopping procedure is called the "Pathway to Prosperity."   Yippe i oh kyyaah.

Both sides are fools and liars. Republicans don't know they lost the election. Democrats won't cut a damned thing. We're going to continue careening from crisis to crisis. Obama needs to step up and cut something besides the cheese!

would cut spending by $4.6 trillion through 2023,

No it does not "cut" anything. It just reduces the amount that might be spent. It is looking out 10 years. How can you cut something that has not happened?

The Joint Committee on Taxation recently released a 96 page report on the tax provisions associated with Affordable Care Act. The report describes the 21 tax increases included in Obamacare, totaling $1.058 trillion – a steep increase from initial assessment, according to the Tax Prof Blog. The summer 2012 estimate is nearly twice the $569 billion estimate produced at the time of the passage of the law in March 2010.

and the R's are the bad guys? "It has been more than 1,400 days since Senate Democrats passed a budget. President Obama has failed to produce his annual budget as required by law this February, his fourth late budget out of five submitted. And he has announced that he has no plans to produce his budget for at least another month."

Seems to me they are the adults in the room

These boys, not surprisingly, learned nothing useful from the last election. Let 'em stick with their script and dig themselves into an even deeper hole. Not only did the GOP lose House seats, but the demographic trend lines portend a dim future for the party. Even Texas is starting to trend Democratic. Believe it. Florida, Virginia, New Mexico, and Colorado will be reliably Democratic. It may not happen in 2016 or 2020, but it's coming. The GOP is in control of the House for now, because of gerrymandered districts, but the numbers are working against any chance of continued control of the House. Boehner can't control the tea party caucus (which has already captured his majority leader--Cantor), so all they can do is continue turning out DOA absurdities like Ryan's budget. The demographic shift (ethnic/racial minorities and the youth vote) is dramatically changing our country. Obama's re-election--in the midst of a tough economy--is clearly affirmation of that fact. His 2008 election was historic. His reelection was, too--for very different reasons. To think otherwise is delusional.

  1. You want to cut? As Ron Paul keeps saying, let's stop being an empire with over 156 military installations all over the world and a military budget greater than all the military budgets of all the major nations of the world combined. I'll add the so-called Black Budget over which the Congress has no control. And did you know that the CIA has its own air force? And stop this useless war in Afghanistan. Why are we there? We have the money for the entitlements but most of it it is flushed down the government' hopper to serve agendas that have nothing to do with the welfare of the people. As Elizabeth Warren says, the entire system is rigged against the middle class of the nation. We need a systemic change to bring government back to serving the people, not hidden agendas, like spraying the upper atmosphere. (Google "chemical trails" and look up in the sky every day to see just another example of government waste. And don't forget all the money we have spent on underground tunnels and concentration camps. Oh, I see, you didn't know about this and I'm crazy. Then do your homework and see if I and thousands of others are right and deeply concerned about the way this government is going. Geoge Carlin is right. The government is controlled by higher powers and they don't give a ---- about you.
