Calif. bus ads called offensive to Islam

SAN FRANCISCO — Civic officials joined Arab and Muslim leaders to denounce what they call offensive anti-Islamic ads that will appear on 10 buses for the next month in San Francisco.

The ads were paid for by the American Freedom Defense Initiative and feature photos of Osama bin Laden, the Times Square car bomber, and the alleged gunman in the Fort Hood, Texas, shootings, accompanied by quotes about warfare and weapons that the group links to Islam.

If these ads are factual, and it sounds that they may be, its up to Muslims to be more active condemning radicals in their religion, which they havn't been.

Part of the problem may be that the press doesn't find appeals to peace and justice by Musliims as newsworthy as hate speech.  The argument could be made that once any religion is put in power, terrible things will follow.  Mark Twain once wondered exactly how many Christians were slaughtered by other Christians in the name of the Prince of Peace.  Read the Old Testament for accounts of mass slaughter by Jews and their enemies.

The ads probably have just enough facts to be believable but they then cross the line my linking militants with the Islamic faith. This happens all the time with propaganda. I think they should stop the ads and let the sponsors sue. Make the sponsors prove this isn't hate speech that could incite violence.

Some of the same people who object to this ad probably utter the most hateful lies about Israelis and Jews.  Would the mayor of SF object to those lies?
