Tierney tops Massachusetts US House delegation in first quarter fundraising

WASHINGTON -- Among House members, U.S. Representative John Tierney leads the Massachusetts delegation in amount of dollars raised during the first quarter of the year, followed by freshman representative Joseph Kennedy III, according to fundraising reports due to the Federal Election Commission Monday.

Tierney, a Salem Democrat who survived a tough re-election battle last November and is expected to face another in 2014, clocked in at $264,130, the highest amount he has ever raised in the first quarter of a non-election year, his campaign said.

Kennedy, a prolific fundraiser who recently created a leadership political action committee to raise higher amounts as Democrats try to win back the House at the midterm election, raised $239,105 in the first quarter.

Representative Richard Neal of Springfield raised $199,138, followed by James McGovern of Worcester, who raised $132,589. Niki Tsongas of Lowell raised $75,921. And at the bottom of the pack are William Keating of Bourne and Michael Capuano of Somerville, who raised $44,845 and $42,825, respectively.

The federal fundraising reports did not include the numbers for U.S. Representatives Stephen Lynch and Edward Markey, who are vying for Secretary of State John Kerry’s former senate seat. The candidates temporarily suspended their campaigns following Monday’s bombings at the Boston Marathon.

Lynch’s campaign had previously reported that he had raised $1.5 million in the first quarter for his U.S. Senate bid. Markey’s campaign has not released its numbers but is expected to do so soon. Fundraising reports for the special election are due on Thursday.

Senator Elizabeth Warren reported raising $330,173 in the first quarter but has just $164,845 in cash on hand after paying debt left over from her campaign to defeat Scott Brown.
