BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man accused of killing his 1-year-old niece by slashing her abdomen has been ordered held in $2.5 million bail.

Police say Hapgood stabbed Zaniyah Calloway to death while babysitting her and an 11-year-old child at a home in Bristol on Monday evening. Officers responded to the scene after a 911 call and encountered a person running toward them carrying the wounded girl. The other child wasn’t hurt.

Police officers gave medical attention to the girl, but she later died at a hospital.
