Ben Bradlee of Washington Post in hospice

WASHINGTON — The wife of former Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee said his health has declined over the past two months and that he is in hospice care.

Sally Quinn said in a C-SPAN television interview broadcast Sunday that the 93-year-old Bradlee has suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for several years and that his health has deteriorated.

The Washington Post quoted Quinn as saying Bradlee sleeps 20 hours a day and doesn’t eat much. She said Bradlee began hospice care at the couple’s home in Washington in mid-September.

Bradlee was editor of the Post from 1968 to 1991, during the newspaper’s coverage of the Pentagon Papers and the Watergate scandal, which helped lead to the resignation of President Nixon. Bradlee is currently vice president at large of the Post.

During his tenure, the Post expanded its network of news bureaus across the country and around the world and became the leading newspaper in Washington.

On Nov. 20, 2013, President Obama awarded Bradlee the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
