Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald, the Trump administration’s newly appointed director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is facing a backlash from public health advocates for having accepted $1 million from Coca-Cola to fight childhood obesity when she was Georgia’s top health official. The CDC shook off its ties to the beverage company in 2013 because of concerns about sugar, but Fitzgerald suggested she would consider accepting Coke money for CDC programs.

Witness emerges to police shooting
MINNEAPOLIS — State investigators said they have interviewed a witness who was near the alley where a Minneapolis police officer shot and killed an unarmed Australian woman. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Friday that the person was bicycling nearby just before the shooting and stopped and watched officers perform CPR on Justine Damond late on July 15. Police Chief Janee Harteau resigned Friday at the request of Mayor Betsy Hodges.

Seaplane evacuated after hard landing
NEW YORK — A seaplane made a hard landing in New York’s East River near Manhattan’s East Side. Ten people were on board and all were evacuated safely after the Friday accident. All declined medical attention, fire officials said. The cause was not determined. The Tailwind Air craft was towed to a dock. Bill Lawrence, the creator of TV shows including ‘‘Scrubs’’ and ‘‘Spin City,’’ was one of the passengers.

Penn Station repairs on track, Amtrak says
NEW YORK — Amtrak said repair work at New York’s Penn Station remains on schedule, two weeks into a two-month project. The project is 30 percent completed, officials said Friday. Amtrak has been pleased with the flow of commuter traffic and is seeing only minor delays The station serves hundreds of thousands of commuters heading into the city from New Jersey and Long Island.
