Former presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush issued a rare joint statement Wednesday to condemn racism in the wake of President Trump’s reversal on the violence in Charlottesville.
“America must always reject racial bigotry, anti-Semitism, and hatred in all forms,” the two Republicans said in the statement posted by a George H.W. Bush spokesman on Wednesday.
“As we pray for Charlottesville, we are reminded of the fundamental truths recorded by that city’s most prominent citizen in the Declaration of Independence: we are all created equal and endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights.”
The statement did not mention Trump by name.

Their comments come a day after President Donald Trump gave weight to the complaints of white nationalists by declaring at a press conference that counterprotesters shared the blame for violence that erupted last weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia.
