Menino heading to DC to push for tougher gun laws

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is scheduled to visit Washington Tuesday and participate in an effort to persuade a bitterly divided Congress to overhaul the background-check system for gun purchases. He will join other mayors and dozens of survivors of gun violence in pushing lawmakers to crack down on agencies that do not submit records to a national database of prohibited purchasers. Nearly a dozen states have failed to submit mental health records, according to one advocacy group.
