Every so often in journalism, there is a powerful meeting of reporter and assignment. Anthony Shadid, the Middle East, and Central Asia were just such a match - but only because he made it so. Fluent in Arabic at his death yesterday at 43 from an asthma attack, he was born an English speaker in Oklahoma City. But Shadid headed overseas after graduation.
