President Obama declared today that he supports gay marriage, reversing his longstanding public statements of supporting equal rights for gay couples that stopped just short of marriage. In explaining his previous stance, Obama told ABC News, “I’ve been going through an evolution on this issue. I’ve always been adamant that gays and lesbians should be treated fairly and equally,” citing the reversal of the Don’t Ask-Don’t Tell policy that barred openly gay servicemen and women from serving in the military.

The Waffler-in-Chief really needs to clue in the nation's news media... He is not a royal, and his views do not have the force of law... So his pronouncement of his evolvement came too late for Gays in North Carolina, no matter what the Waffler thinks... When in reality.... who really cares that he is going to try and get his Justice Department flunkie to overrule the Defense of Marriage Act without a judge in sight? I note that someone below refers to Barry the O as the 'Panderer-in-Chief', a much more appropriate title than 'Waffler-in-Chief'...
Wow, you mean gay people are people too? What a novel concept! It's nice to finally have an adult in the Oval Office, one who doesn't pander to religious bigots. Here's another voting bloc that Romney can kiss goodbye along with women and minorities...
Why is the correspondent being an African-American an issue? Oh, that's right, it's you. But we're getting closer to the real TheSystemWorked, aren't we? L-O-L!!!!!!
The "someone below" is someone well known to you and a notorious *********, so your citation of his posts is telling.
It's about time. But better late than never! Meanwhile, Governor Romney bewails the loss of Mr Grenell to his team, but lacked the spine to stand up for a loyal conservative who happens to be gay and who would have reportedly been an asset to his foreign policy team.
"...Right now, Americans of all backgrounds desperately need jobs, and that is what Senator Brown is focused on", said Marcie Kinzel, spokesperson for Sen. Brown, when his campaign was asked for a statement in response to the President's announcement on gay marriage. Certainly no need for a memorable stage set for that brave proclamation! L - O - L!! Whenever extremist conservative commenters start dragging out references to Greek columns (or stoop to referencing the skin color of the interviewer), that is a sure sign the President has done something so positive that even those who attack him here in this space every day cannot attack thetopic directly, and so must fall back on tired, lame-even-then attacks from the 2008 playbook. L - O - L!! What do campaign props from four years ago have to do with today's announcement? L - O - L!! You know, conservatives must really love the President to keep comparing him to Jesus-- they're the only ones I've ever heard do that. it's a bit over the top, but I suppose when compared to their candidates, The President does look pretty good. I wonder if the conservative Kool-Aid guzzlers know that Wanna-Be-in-Chief Romney was too much of a coward to fight publicly on behalf of one of his own top advisors, a proud GAY American who was recently forced to resign for simply being GAY. Too funny, indeed. L - O - L!! L - O - L!!
So let me get this straight. It took him more than three years in office to change his mind? I am sure this has nothing to do with an upcoming election, right? Want's to get the gay vote, right? While I am sure this means something to the gay community and I ham glad for them. However, the ongoing war and the terrible state of our economy is much more important to me. Social issues as this one, and abortion may be important topics, but neither will be important if we do not resurrect our country from the more serious problems it faces.
What a great moment. Wow! I've lived long enough to see another historic event. I've seen lots of them and some of them brought tears to my eyes, as did this one. I love it when the leadership of our country is on the right side of history, with nothing that needs to be apologized for down the road. Unfortunately, that can't be said of Mitt Romney. This may cost the President votes. It might even cost him re-election. It took a lot of courage to make this stand at the beginning of his campaign when there's no assurance that it won't have a negative impact. We still have rampant intolerance among many groups in this country, and he could have remained silent. Thank you, Mr. President.
You seem to equate a simple one-sentence statement during an interview as evidence that he's ignoring the war and the economy. That's idiotic. I can think about the Red Sox every day and still be concerned with more important matters. If I read you wrong, I apologize.
Obama says he supports same-sex marriage, but it should not be federalized, and it should be left up to the states. So, here is the Barack Obama plan for same-sex marriage: Two men in Mass. get married. They move to another state not recognizing same-sex marriage, say Arizona. What happens to their marriage under the Barack Obama plan? It is not valid. They file their federal taxes. Under the Barack Obama plan, they cannot file as a married couple. The federal government does not recognize same-sex marriage. One of them is in the military. They cannot receive spousal benefits affforded to married couples. Under the Barack Obama same-sex marriage plan, same-sex marriage has not been "federalized." So what exactly does Obama support? What has changed under the Barack Obama plan for same-sex marriage? What has he said or done that gay rights activists are so excited about? Under his plan, nothing changes. What about DOMA? It writes into law that the federal governent does not recognize same-sex marriages. Obama says the federal government should not recognize same-sex marriage, which is consistent with what is currently in effect because of DOMA. So, why doesn't he support DOMA? This is the same guy who in 2008 said that he believes marriage is husband and wife, but was against prop 8, which wrote into the California constitution that a marriage is a husband and wife. Why does anyone vote for this guy?
President Barack Obama made history today profoundly. And I thank him. For too long, some of my friends have been separate and unequal. My husband and I have one friend we have know for over 40 years who several years ago was beaten to a pulp and came close to death because he is gay. The attack left him disabled in a wheelchair. It has been a pleasure to see the nationwide polls gradually shift to express the opinion that all citizens deserve the same rights. If some in this nation want to understand leadership, they have today a prime example. This is what the essence of courage is all about. Thank you, Mr. President, for giving us your brave decision.
